Google Fi App Relaunch
Project : Google Fi App Relaunch
Year: 2023
Role: Visual/UX designer
Business challenge:
To increase the Fi app open rate. The open rate was less than 50% within the 30 day window. Notifications were convoluted, and the team wanted to explore contextual notifications as a solution to help increase the open rate. I designed the member status, which is a key component to the new app design as its job was to surface warning states for our members.
Design challenge:
How to implement new Google material specs, use newly updated components in the Google fi design system while working with engineers to figure out the solutions for previous components and overall look and feel of the app. Decisions were made for use of color, banner designs, and type size. All decisions were made with accessibility in mind.
Solution:
Working closely with my team, PM’s, engineers and team leads to design the new app. At times, this meant reiterating and compromising to reach the best possible solution.
My work:
A. Cycle indicator
I explored many ways in which a user could possibly, at a quick glance understand how many days they had left in their billing cycle. After many discussions and mocks, we decided that given that the top navigation, group icon, and logo will be sitting on the top- that we should be as simple and clear as possible by just using type and not having any sort of visual aid as on mobile it would not give any added value and the space simply would not allow for any visual that would do the job.
B. Group icon
I created the design for the group icon based on new brand guides. Playful shapes are common and often seen at Google design and the shapes in the new guide inspired the design of this icon which represents a group of shapes but also could represent two people. Users of Google Fi app would only see this icon when they have 2+ users in their group.
C. Member status
I was tasked with designing a member status which is there to show a user whether or not they had tasks that they need to complete or something urgent which may disrupt their service. There were many explorations based on a breakdown of type of messaging and urgency.
D. Playful icon shapes
I presented look and feel explorations for icon designs and resourced the assets necessary to use for the icons.
Results: Google fi app launched on time with a whole new look.
